Back at the SOF Suffolk Supper in September 2025, Colin Wigg (G48-54) mentioned that he had recently visited St Leonard’s Church, Billingford and had noticed the state of the memorial stone laid in April 2018 to mark the centenary of Gordon Flowerdew being awarded his VC. Click here to read the story about the stone laying, which was attended by many OFs and members of the College.
At the time of Colin’s visit the memorial looked especially sad after such a brief period of time and was almost illegible – see picture below.
A couple of quotations were obtained for the cleaning and St Leionard’s PCC and Billingford Parish Council were approached by the SOF Trustees. Members of the Flowerdew family were also contacted. A quote for the cleaning was agreed, but neither the PCC or PC had funds available. The SOF Trustees therefore agreed to fund the cost with contributions being received from Flowerdew family.
The work could not be carried out till the dry weather in the spring and at the end of April 2026 it was completed and what a transformation you can see in the pictures.
Huge thanks to Colin for bringing this to our attention.
