The Moreau Leaving Scholarship celebrated its 20th anniversary with a special gathering attended by c.45 guests, including past and present scholars, mentors, and members of Framlingham College and the Society of Old Framlinghamians, each of whom have provided wonderful assistance to the Scholarship process over the years. The evening in the Fowler pavilion carried a warm and informal atmosphere, reflective of the close bonds that the Scholarship has sought to unite.

The Moreau Scholarship has always sought to emphasise the importance of character. Scholars are chosen not only for their engagement with the College and their peer group, but for their perceived willingness to inspire, and contribute to the wider school and SOF community, following the completion of their education at the College. This ethos is fundamental to the ongoing desire that the scholarship continues to grow into much more than simply a financial award. The Scholarship seeks to provide a body of OFs that celebrate heritage, ambition, and service and supports the SOF and the College, whilst also maintaining their closer friendship groups.

The celebration was also an opportunity to thank those who have sustained this legacy. Special recognition was given to Peter Howard-Dobson (R65-69) for his leadership at the Scholarship’s inception and continued work on the mentor process, to David Mallett (K93-03), Chair of the Selection Panel whose leadership and dedication have been instrumental in guiding the programme and to other members of the Selection Panel and College staff, who have all provided so much support and vital assistance to the Scholarship over the years. The presence of Louise North, Principal of Framlingham College, and Kim Alexandra Dickel (M97-98), President of the Society of Old Framlinghamians, lent further distinction to the evening, underscoring the importance of the Scholarship within both the College and its alumni community.

Above all, the event was a tribute to the Scholars themselves. Although officially a three-year scholarship term, it is wonderful to see many Scholars continue in their involvement and service to the SOF community. Whether through membership of the Society’s council, organising reunions or sporting events, participating in the Scholarship selection process, or mentoring other scholars. These individuals have, in particular, shown that the Scholarship is not a one-way gift, but a shared commitment to community and supporting the SOF and Framlingham College.

As the Scholarship looks ahead, the evening was a reminder that while achievements may take many forms, it is character and service that endure. The first twenty years of the Moreau Scholarship has hopefully built the foundations for a lasting legacy, that has shaped, and will continue to shape, lives and strengthen the Framlinghamian community.
