Society represented at the funeral of Hugh Kennon (Hon OF)

Douglas Thomson (K53-61) was pleased to represent the OF Society at the funeral of Hugh Kennon (Hon OF) at Wakefield Crematorium on the 21st of April.

The sincere service was led by the vicar who spoke of Hugh’s kindness, consideration of others, his love of teaching, the outdoors and his enjoyment from his and Margaret’s travels.  Such qualities were enhanced by her including three reminiscences sent in by three old boys of Lancaster Grammer School where Hugh had taught before Framlingham.  Such feelings and praise towards him were enhanced further with a tribute from Ed Surguy (G77-87) read by Arron Rimmer (Z77-87) – click here to read.

His daughter Helen Weldon (P79-84) then read the emotional Irish poem “An old Irish Blessing”.  The Society’s condolences were covey to Margaret (Hon OF) who graciously remembered that she and Hugh had some years earlier attended an OF Northern Gathering.

A number of those connected with the College as teachers or pupils were also present.  Former staff included Malcolm Todd (Hon OF), Nick Ward (Hon OF), Marc Godfrey , Sarah Godfrey, Peter Hayes and Catherine Hayes and pupils were Arron Rimmer (Z77-87), Helen Weldon (P79-84) and Simon Kennon (Z74-83).

I am sad to hear of Hugh's passing. I have very fond memories of working with him in Garrett House and in the Economics Department. He was an inspirational teacher and had a profound influence on my career. My best wishes go to Margaret, Helen, and Simon.

I am posting this message on behalf of Helen Weldon, Hugh's daughter : Subject: Thanks from Hugh Kennon’s family Message: On behalf of my mother & brothers I want to pass on a message from us all to sincerely thank the past Garratt House pupil who anonymously sent a beautiful floral tribute for my father’s funeral with some very touching words. They were much appreciated (along with other written tributes).
