Service of Thankgiving for much loved OF Vice President

Service of Thankgiving for much loved OF Vice President

It is with great sadness that we report the death, on Sunday 5th October, of Tony Martin (G 47-55), after a short illness. Tony’s many friends within the Society and at the College, acknowledge and applaud his major contributions over many years as a Vice-President and at Council meetings, dinners and College events.

Many OFs and members of the College had visited Tony in hospital over the last couple of months and even on the day he died, Ruth Elwood (P80-84) spent a few hours with him, leaving at 2.30pm, knowing he didn’t have long to live.  Soon after Ruth, John Bridges (S57-66) also visited him, leaving him in the company of very close friends, who were at his bedside when he died at 6.00pm.

There will be a very private cremation.  This is being followed by a celebration of his life on Satuday 22nd November 2025 in the College Chapel starting at 11am.  OFs are very much encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be provided afterwards in Pauls Court.  If you can’t attend in person then the College have arranged for the service to be live streamed from 10:45am.  Click here for the link.  Also click here for the Order of Service.

A full obituary will follow. In the meantime, you might like to refer to his Distinguished OF profile.

The following picture of Tony with Ruth and Kate Jackson (P84-93) was taken earlier in 2025 at Kate’s pub The Sorrell Horse where they much enjoyed lunch together.

I sorry to hear of the parting of Tony. We were contemporary students and both in Garret. We both lived in Suffolk, Tony in Ipswich where his father was my dentist and me in Felixstowe. We used to get together in the holidays, particularly in our final year at Fram. Our mutual interest was shooting and my outstanding memory of him was an attempt to win (and succeed) the House Shooting trophy at Sizewell in our final weeks at the College. We spent a great deal of time on the Back with our .303 rifles (and no bullets!) trying to shoot each others eye out from about 5 paces. One of us took aim and shot whilst the other looked through a pin-hole in the centre of a hand-held target and judged the merit of the shot. When we left Fram we were both presented with P15, .303 rifles by Sgt-Major "Nibs" (sorry I can't recall his actual surname) who used to assist the school shooting team. We both took to them to a shoot at a Bromeswell Rifle Club meeting after we left Fram and this was probably the last time we actually met before I left Suffolk. He visited my father in Wiltshire whist he was chauffeur to a General as his contribution to National Service. I contacted "Looney" (yes, that was his nickname, probably because he never took life too seriously at Fram) last November on the telephone and spent about an hour catching up. Unlike me he had not moved far from Fram, living, not quite in the College grounds, but almost as close as one could get. He was a good friend of the College and will be missed.

I am very sorry to learn of Tony's passing. I got to know him in later years when he and Roger Askew used to call at the bakery in Framlingham for refreshment. They would often be in deep discussion at the next table. I saw less of Tony in recent years, because he started to use the Two Magpies bakery, in what was the former Barclays Bank, when that cafe was established. Sometimes, one would see Tony at OF dinners. I recall my partner and I sharing a table with Tony and Ruth at an OF dinner at the RAF Club only about three years or so ago. Tony was a great character and I am sorry to learn of his passing.
