Norman Porter (K50-57) has completed his latest book, Homage to Heroes, something of a contrast to his History of Brandeston Hall.  Chris Keeble has once again collaborated as the designer of this 180-page, fully illustrated book. The writing of it was inspired by the breaking up of the Framlingham VC case in the Imperial War Museum.

It began life as a special tribute to those Framlingham College Victoria Cross heroes, William Hewitt, Gordon Flowerdew and Augustus Agar, describing their exploits and the paths taken by their medals. The scope then expanded way beyond that, taking in the concept of heroism generally, and trying to define what it is that makes a hero. It evolved into including many other heroes, military and civilian, up to and including a tragic tale of OF heroism in 2026.

Norman also examines the ethos of education and of Framlingham College at different times in history – what it was that bred those heroes. It also attempts to define what it is that makes a hero. It is an uplifting reminder, in challenging times, of something of the best of the human spirit, and of the role of education in creating the values which are carried forward into adult life.

The final section of the book – a selection of a whole range of personal heroes, with personal dedications, has become one of the most fascinating parts of it all. These were contributed by some 50 people, OFs and otherwise, whose prior financial support and commitment made the book possible.  The SOF Trustees kindly funded the designing costs.

Proceeds beyond break-even point will be passed on the Royal British Legion (General Sir Pat Howard-Dobson OF was the sometime President), Framlingham College Chapel (where there are memorials to so many Framlingham heroes), and the Duke of Edinburgh Award/CCF (arguably one of the seedbeds of heroes) at Framlingham.  This happily coincides with the celebrations of the 125^th anniversary of the setting up of the College CCF in 1901.
