Norman Porter writes : Despite a pretty solid performance OFGS failed to hold on to the Suffolk/Norfolk inter-schools former students’ trophy, so there was no huge bottle of claret for distribution at the Aldeburgh Autumn Meeting this year. Once again the event was held at Thetford Golf Club.
The girls of St Felix not only played very well, but had something of a cushion of 3 courtesy shots each so they ran out easy winners, with Ipswich School – providing a full team of 6 this year – (last year they struggled in this all-counting Stableford format with just 5 players – just beating us into second place.
We turned out a strong, if less-than-youthful team of Norman Mayhew, Martin Lamb, Robin Anderton, Michael Spencer, Barry Hitchcock and Colin Wigg, with Norman Porter as non-playing Captain, lurking in the background as a possible reserve. The over-all impression is that this competition is now bringing in stronger teams, that it is being taken seriously and that it is likely to grow, even though elements of it may evolve. With three different teams having won the competition in the first 3 years, the situation looks healthy, and it is planned to return to Thetford GC next year in early September, with more schools possibly lined up to compete. Since our players represent the Society rather than themselves they receive a subsidy from the OFGC for which they are very grateful. OF golfers locally seem to be held in high regard – a reputation to foster.
