Martin Myers-Allen (Hon OF & VP) writes : As you may be aware William Henry Hewitt’s VC (1894-1900) was returned to the College for safekeeping from the Lord Ashcroft’s Collection at the IWM last Thursday. When William’s wife gave the College his VC after his death, many years later. It was given to inspire future generations. We must meet those wishes, it is not to be hidden in a vault and I am working on a policy for private viewings for visitors. In the meantime Roy Witham and I are happy to bring the VC to Chapel from 1:00 – 1:30pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this coming week – 3rd, 4th and 5th December 2025 from 1:00 – 1:30pm. OFs are welcome to come along and need to report to reception on arrival.
He was awarded his VC for attack on a pillbox in September 1917. He died in 1966 in Cheltenham and his ashes were scattered at sea off Cape Town, South Africa.
