Was one of America’s most distinguished archaeologists and was awarded the OBE in 1992 “for services to British cultural interests in Williamsburg, Virginia.” An obituary in The Times described him as “Wilfully eccentric British archaeologist renowned for his work on excavating America’s early colonial history”.
