Mr Humphrey Edwin Truman (Garrett 1949-1952)

He was raised in Essex and was the elder brother of tennis players Christine Truman and Nell Truman.  During the 1950s and 1960s he competed at Wimbledon, mostly as a doubles player. He made the mixed doubles quarter-finals at the 1959 Wimbledon Championships with sister Christine and featured in the singles main draw in 1961 and 1962.  He reached the 3rd round of the Mens doubles in 1956 and 1963.

Beyond his playing career, he contributed to the sport administratively as a former member of the All England Club Committee, underscoring his longstanding connection to Wimbledon.  He also trained as a pilot in the RAF and was one of the rare British sportsmen to have represented his country at both squash and tennis.  In squash he appeared at the British Open.

In 2013 he had the honour of meeting the Pope at the Vatican with Virginia Wade – see photo

In more recent years he has made occasional appearances at Wimbledon, appearing in the Royal Box in both July 2025 and July 2026.
