Captain Sutton Smith DSO (1881-1882)

Joined Royal Navy in 1895 and became a mine-sweeper commander. In WW1 was awarded a Distinguished Service Order on 14 July 1916 for distinguished service with the Auxiliary Patrol in 1915 “carried out duties under extremely arduous and hazardous conditions of weather and exposure to enemy attack and mines with marked zeal, gallantry and success.” Also awarded Croix-de-Guerre with Palm. While in the Navy, apparently went nine times round the world in a sailing ship.
