Captain Harold Meldrum MC (1911-1914)

During WW1 served in 14th Battalion of Gloucestershire Regiment and was awarded the Military Cross on 27 July 1916 “For conspicuous gallantry. He led a bombing party into the enemy’s trenches, captured and brought back a machine-gun after killing the gun crew, and successfully bombed dug-outs. They were heavily shelled when returning.”.  In the same action as he won his MC, College school master Captain Harry Butt was killed.  Apparently Harold Meldrum shot the German who killed Butt.

During his time at the College he was a Sub-prefect and member of Football 1st XI in 1913.  He was also gymnasium captain and in 1914 won both the 1/4 mile and 1/2 mile races.  In 1913 and 1914 he won the Waugh Cup for boxing in the middle weight division.  He was also a member of the committee of the Literary, Scientific and Debating Society.  On leaving the College in 1914 he immediately joined the London Rifle Regiment.
