OFGS Spring Meeting 2015
Golf Society The OFGS Spring Meeting took place at Frinton Golf Club on Thursday, 7 May. This was our first visit to Frinton and attracted a good field of 25 players who were well looked after by the Professional and other staff.

There were three new faces in Ian and Matthew Low, members of the home club, and John Ellerby. Guy Lennox, who had not played in recent years, made a welcome return to OFGS golf. As can be seen from the results below the new boys did rather well!

Halford Hewitt 2015 - Lost in the Fog!
Golf Society Richard Graves reports on the OFGS's team's progress at this year's Halford Hewitt, held at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club, Deal, from the 9th to 12th April 2015:

The 2015 Halford Hewitt Squad included: Gavin Cowell,  Charlie Plunkett,  Peter Watts,  Richard Graves,  Johnny Wybar,  Lottie Whyman,  Will Poole,  Rob Atton,  Matt Stolls,  Jonny Newton,  Andrew Towler,  Hugh Curle and Mike Schneidau. There were first appearances for Will Poole and Lottie Whyman, who became our first Lady Hewitt member.

We were blessed again by some fine weather during Hewitt week.   Practice times were secured on both the Tuesday and Wednesday before the 1st Round proper on the Thursday.   Deal was running firm with slick greens, so provided perfect links conditions. However, on the afternoon of our first-round match against Shrewsbury, an impenetrable fog came down!

Grafton Morrish Match Report 2014
Golf Society David Turnbull (OFGS Hon Sec) writes: "Playing with St. Lawrence in the South East Regional qualifying round on Saturday, 10 May at Knole Park Golf Club, Sevenoaks, the team of Gavin Cowell, Charlie Plunkett, Rob Atton, Matt Stolls, John Wybar and new member, Will Poole, found the going very tough in most unseasonal weather of a strong wind and frequent spells of heavy rain.  Despite an excellent score of 23 points by Rob and Matt, the overall team score was disappointing and we finished at the lower end of the table, thus failing to qualify for the knock-out stages.

The format of scratch foursomes off the back tees, on an even longer course than normal, is always quite a challenge even in easy conditions. Preparation for the event was not helped by the fact that some members of the team were delayed in traffic for nearly an hour near the Dartford Crossing. It is hoped that a move to Gog Magog near Cambridge can be made in the not too distant future, but this depends on a vacancy becoming available. A move there would make sense logistically as the majority of our team come down from East Anglia."

OFGS Autumn Meeting Report
Golf Society
David Turnbull, OFGS Hon Sec reports: The meeting was held in damp humid conditions on Friday, 13th September at Aldeburgh Golf Club where we were looked after superbly as usual. This year there was another excellent turn out of 29 members, including one new face, Dan Wastnage. Richard Sayer, President of SOF, made a welcome return many years after his last outing at Aldeburgh. It had been hoped to see some other new faces and also returning members, but sadly this was not to be the case.

It was also good to see Susan Webber and Simon Sinclair from the College who joined us for lunch. Unfortunately Simon had to return to school duties in the afternoon but Susan, a member of Aldeburgh, played in the afternoon, marking one of the foursomes pairings card.

Grafton Morrish Qualifying 2013: Dateline 11th May
Golf Society

David Turnbull, OFGS Hon. Sec. writes: "Following the recent success of the Halford Hewitt team, the OFGS team set off for the beautiful surroundings of Knole Park Golf Club, Sevenoaks, with high hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the tournament.

Playing with Sutton Valence in the South East regional qualifying round on Saturday, 11 May, the well-established pairing of Gavin Cowell and John Wybar made an excellent start, scoring 25 points. Unfortunately the pairings of Charlie Plunkett and Matt Stolls, and Rob Atton and Hugh Curle were unable to match this, and the team scored a total of 62 points to finish at the lower end of the table, thus failing to qualify for the knockout stages."

OF Golf Spring Meeting
Golf Society
The OFGS Spring Meeting took place for the fourth time at Royal Worlington & Newmarket Golf Club on Thursday, 9 May. The weather was fine and sunny, but there was an extremely strong wind which made good scoring difficult for most people. The course, as always, was testing and in excellent condition. Everyone enjoyed a good lunch and were well looked after by the secretary and his staff.

OFGS Heroes End 24 Year Halford Hewitt Drought
David Turnbull, OFGS Secretary, writes with news to lift the spirits of OF Golfers everywhere:

“On Thursday, 11th April we were drawn to play against Stonyhurst in the first round at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club, Deal. For the second time since his captaincy of the team, Richard Graves arranged for the team to play some practice rounds at the beginning of March, and this definitely paid off.

For once, we were able to field our strongest team, so hopes of success were high. Pat Spraggs, our top player, made the long journey down from Scotland to join Richard Graves, Rob Atton, Gavin Cowell, Jonny Newton, Charlie Plunkett, Matt Stolls, Andrew Towler, Peter Watts and Johnny Wybar, with Mike Schneidau as reserve.
