Society of Old Framlinghamians Annual Dinner - 28 March 2020

College Crest
Simon Dougherty writes: The Society’s Annual Dinner will be held at the Royal Air Force Club, 128 Piccadilly, London W1J 7PY on Saturday 28 March 2020 at 7.00pm for 7.30pm.  Prior to the dinner, the Society will hold its AGM at 6.15pm. While it is being held, Partners and guests will be able to relax in the ground floor Churchill Bar which will be open from 6.00pm.  Pre-dinner drinks will be served in the Churchill Bar from 7 o’clock, with dinner being served in the first floor Queen’s Room at 7.30pm. Dress is Black Tie or equivalent.  After dinner, Christina Johnston (V01-06), the well-known coloratura soprano, will give a short performance.

The cost of the dinner is £58 per head including half a bottle of wine.  We are subsidising younger OFs – the first 20 OFs aged under 30 years on 28 March 2020, to apply and pay for places, will be charged only £29 – this is a remarkable offer!  A vegetarian option may be requested at the time of application.  We have arranged a bar extension in the Churchill Bar up to midnight, so there will be plenty of time to do this after the dinner.

A letter giving full details is here and an application form is here.  Tables will be arranged to seat 10, so you can reserve a table for your group or apply for individual tickets – just fill in the form as appropriate. The closure date for applications is noon on Friday 20 March 2020.  Cancellation without financial penalty may be made until the same date.  Transport from Framlingham College to the RAF Club and return has been arranged – full details of how to book this are in the linked letter.

Please book early to make sure you have a seat! I look forward to seeing you on the night.  Should you have any questions, please contact me, or Kate Jackson OF Coordinator as detailed in the attached letter.

OF gathering in Auckland New Zealand

Auckland Reunion - February 2020 (1) - small
Richard Bearne (K59-62) writes :  We eventually got to meet up in Auckland with Mike Green (K60-63) visiting from the UK and Katherine Jackson (P86-91). Mike Green‘s brother was unable to come as he had to return to the UK, however there was much laughter telling tales of our time at Fram! Lovely to meet Katherine, who had much in common with my wife both being teachers.

Katherine is in favour of having a proper OF meeting later in the year, perhaps in Rotorua or Taupo.

Cam Goodhead (G10-15) writes :  For my masters degree, I will be heading out to Borneo in March, to analyse the use of drones as a new method for surveying wild orangutan populations. If you are interested in a brief overview of the project, I have created a small video talking about the project as part of a crowdfunder I set up: https://exeter.hubbub.net/p/OrangutanDroneProject/pitch/

Any help you can provide will be much appreciated.

OF Hockey Report - January 2020

OF Hockey Photo - January 2020 - small
Luke Quartermaine (K11-16) reports that alongside the netball match the SOF fielded a hockey side against the recently highly acclaimed 1st XI. After a strong few days of pre-season the College must have felt somewhat confident about our less than athletic looking team.

However, read the full report here.

OF Netball Report - January 2020

OF NetBall - January 2020 - small
Rene Bahar (M12-17) reports that on Friday 3rd January the College 1st VII took on the Old Framlinghamians in a tightly contested netball match. The College girls, fresh from an intense day of pre-season training, started the game strongly by taking an early lead. However, not to be outdone by the youngsters, the OF’s battled their way back into the game.

Thanks to Colin Wigg (G48-54), we have the following based on an article in The Eastern Daily Press:

Normandy veteran, Ken Mayhew, now aged 103, has long been a keen supporter of Norwich City Football Club. The Norwich City goalkeeper during the 2019/20 season is Tim Krul, a Dutchman. In January 2020 Ken was invited as guest of honour to the away match versus Tottenham Hotspur, at the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium. And a special event ensued.

Death of John Edwards (K45-55)

College Crest
It is with much sadness that we report the death of former SOF President and School Governor for many years, John Edwards (K45-55) on 12 January 2020 in Lister Hospital in Stevenage.  He was SOF President in 1977 & 1978.  He was taken into hospital a couple of weeks ago with a chest infection and never really recovered.

Thanks to the College a Memorial service for John will be held in College Chapel at 1400 on 13 May 2020. It would be helpful if those planning to attend could email Richard Sayer to advise likely attendance to help with catering.  John’s funeral will be a private family affair but there will be a local memorial service at St Giles at Codicote in Herts on 19 March at 1100.
