Ken Mayhew at Lord's - 100 not out

P1010868 (169x170)
The Times on 10 July 2017 carried the following report "MCC members who reach their century are invited to spend a day in the committee room. Yesterday, Major Ken Mayhew, a former Minor Counties cricketer who was born in January 1917, was the committee’s guest. He landed at Normandy on D-Day in 1944 before fighting to liberate Europe from the Nazis."

OF Golf Society News - Cyril Gray & Grafton Morrish reports

David Turnbull reports that the OF Golf Society has been busy again with golf competititions.

Click here to read the Cyril Gray report and see a team photo.

In the Grafton Morrish John Wybar & new member Harry Bush (29 points) and Charlie Plunkett & Rob Atton (28 points) played very well but Matt Low & Hugh Curle (18 points) did less so. We totalled 75 points and the qualifying score was 77 so we missed out by 2/3 points. It was enjoyable, but not the result we wanted.

OF Rugby - Greene King IPA 7s - May 2017

OF Rugby - Greene King IPA 7s - May 2017 (170x119)
Nick Whitehead (K06-11) reports : On 7 May the OFs fielded a 12 man squad in the Greene King IPA 7s at Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club.

The event was attended by over 2,000 people and featured an 'elite' competition that included Northampton Saints, Worcester Warriors, England Development, Ireland Development, France Development and the Army first team.

The OFs played in the 'Open' and were grouped with the Royal Navy, Bulldogs Black and the Stunts.

The guys beat the Bulldogs and the Stunts but unfortunately were beaten by the Royal Navy's team which lead to the OFs not making the knockout stages on points difference; missing out by just 4 points.

The team had a great day out catching up and playing some decent rugby. A big thank you to Cam Greenhall for all his hard work pioneering and organising this event. If anyone is interested in playing in future OF 7s event please let Cam know and join our Facebook group (called OF 7s). The next event is Exeter 7s so likely to be a decent weekend away.

Here's a picture of the squad including the new OF rugby kit kindly funding by the SOF!

SOF Ypres Memorial Service

IMG_7414 (151x170)
SOF Past Presidents Norman Porter and Chris Essex accompanied by the College Chaplain Rev Brynn Bayman and Lt Colonel Myers-Allen held a service on Sunday 21st May 2017 in St George’s Memorial Church, Ypres, Belgium.

The service included the unveiling of a plaque installed in memory of the 150 former Students, Masters and Staff who gave up their lives in the Great War. St George’s Memorial Church is decorated with memorials in honour of those who gave their lives for our freedom. Thanks to the generous benefaction from the SOF Trustees, it was possible to add Framlingham College to the Memorial Chapel.

The brief service was conducted by the College Chaplain and Lt Colonel Myers-Allen laid a wreath. As part of the service Mr Norman Porter also paid tribute to the fallen with a recital of former master Alfred Victor Radcliff’s fitting poem –  Optimism. Alfred Radcliff was one of those who died during WW1. Chris Essex read Psalms 23. The service was supported by the local parish priest who spoke admirably of the dedication of the SOF’s and the College in remembering those you gave up their yesterdays for our todays. In the words of Alfred Radcliff – “For tiny hopes like tiny flowers of Spring, Will come, though death and ruin hold the land”.
