Arctic Adventure Lecture
Tracks in the snow
Adventure-minded OFs of all generations may be interested in a talk to be held in the Headmaster Porter Theatre on Thursday 29th October at 7.00 for 7.30 pm. The talk is part of this autumn’s Framsoc programme.

An item in the Daily Telegraph on May 30th described how Alec Greenwell (son of Sir Edward Greenwell) and Ed Cooper recently followed in the footsteps of Alec’s Great Uncle, David Haig-Thomas*, who travelled 250 miles across Greenland in 1938. Sir Ranulph Fiennes was a patron of their expedition.

Alec and Ed will talk about their travels from North West Greenland to Ellesmere Island and Haig-Thomas Island, having embarked on this arctic adventure which pushed them to the limit, both spiritually and mentally. They faced temperatures of minus 40 degrees, and the threat of bear attack.

The talk is in aid of a special new bell for Cretingham Church to mark centenary of WW1, a project close to the heart of OF Vice President Robert Mayhew, who is a member of the PCC. Tickets are £12-50 from Pamela Pinner (01728685406).

OF President of Suffolk Show
Terry Hunt - 2015 Suffolk Show- Lt 015 SS day 1 grand parade 21
Terry Hunt (K68-75) had the great honour of being President of the Suffolk Show this year. He said: “My wife Jane and I had two hugely enjoyable, whirlwind days in the sunshine, meeting hundreds of people, all of whom seemed to having a great time. As someone who grew up in the heart of the Suffolk countryside, and first attended the Show more than 50 years ago, to be President is a huge privilege.”

Terry's role as President of the Suffolk Agricultural Association (SAA), which organises the county show, is for one year until February 2016 – click to see some photos here . Away from the Show, Terry is playing a part in the SAA's educational crusade, to build greater awareness of farming among today's schoolchildren. This has included a new initiative called Tractors in Schools, in which more than 60 Suffolk farmers took their tractors into primary school playgrounds.

In his "day job'' Terry is Editor-in-Chief at Archant Suffolk, which includes the editorship of the EADT and Ipswich Star newspapers.

150th Anniversary Alaskan Event breaks records!
Yes, you read that right, an Alaskan event!! Just when I thought the last SOF Overseas event to celebrate 150th anniversary had been held in Hamburg, I hear from Nick Carlton (G63-70) that a celebration was held in Alaskan waters on Saturday 8 August 2015. Nick as many of you will know is a long standing captain with Princess cruises and is currently captaining Grand Princess. On board for this latest cruise was OF Bryan Pearson (S45-47) and his wife Celestine. Bryan is the only OF based in Hawaii and has cruised with Nick as captain a number of times.

They decided to have an impromptu lunch to celebrate the 150th Anniversary in what was fittingly called College Fjord, which is the northern sector of Prince William Sound. At latitude 61 degrees North this is definitely the most northerly of the 150th celebrations and in fact the most northerly OF event ever. In what again must be a first, a special cake was also made by the onboard Italian Pastry Chef, Beniamino.

Click here to read a detailed report and see a number of photos of the scenery, food, cake and a couple of OFs resplendent in their OF ties.
