Ed Sheeran meets best mate from Brandeston Hall on Graham Norton Show

Screen Shot 2017-01-23 at 21.27.37 (170x62)
Were you watching the Graham Norton Show on Friday 20 January 2017?  The main guest on the show was Ed Sheeran (BH96-02) and at the end of the show Graham went over as usual to a member of the public sitting in the "Red Chair".  Sitting in the chair and initially unrecognised by Ed was OF James Mee (R95-09) who introduced himself as Ed's best friend at Brandeston.  You can watch the programme here on BBC iPlayer.

Since the show Ed has released the video of his latest single featuring Framlingham Castle and called "Castle on the Hill".  You can watch the video on Youtube. The video features someone playing the part of Ed and that actor is another OF Benjamin Fairbanks Weston (K10-13).

SOF Annual Dinner - SATURDAY 8th April 2017

College Crest

This year we will be returning to Framlingham College for the Society of Old Framlinghamians Annual Dinner which will be held on Saturday 8 April 2017.  Prior to the dinner, the Society will hold its Annual General Meeting which will take place in the Library at 6.15pm. While it is being held, partners and guests will be able to relax in the Paul’s Court Cafe where Coffee and Tea and a bar will be available.

Pre-dinner drinks will be served in Paul’s Court Cafe from 7 o’clock, with dinner being served at 7.30pm. The cost of the dinner is excellent value-for-money at £30 per head and, as usual, we are subsidising younger OFs – the first 20 OFs aged under 30 years on 8 April 2017 to apply will be charged only £15 per head.  A vegetarian option will be available.  Dress is lounge suit or equivalent.

Full details are in the notification letter and the application form. Tables will be arranged to seat 10 so you can reserve a table for your group or apply for individual tickets – just fill in the form as appropriate.

No overnight accommodation will be available at the College on this occasion.  A list of local accommodation is attached to the notification letter.

All attending have been offered free entry to the Framlingham Country Show which will be held on 8 and 9 April 2017 on the Front of the College. If you wish to take advantage of this offer, please contact Jane Easey separately (jeasey@FramCollege.co.uk or +44 (0)1728 727227).

Ben Wright joins Australian Premier League

Ben Wright photo (165x170)
It was announced yesterday that Ben Wright (G06-11) was leaving Langley School in March as their Head of Hockey to join the Old Aquinians Hockey Club in the Australian Premier League.  This is a move that will see Ben further his career as a professional hockey player and we wish him all the best.

He worked at the College after leaving in 2011, before joining Langley in September 2015 as Head Hockey coach at the age of 21.  He's also currently player/coach of Harleston Magpies.

Ben says “Having the opportunity to play at a national level in Australia is something that I cannot wait to experience. It will help me develop and push myself as an athlete as well as a coach. “

Annual OF Hockey Match against College

C1rDrioWQAUpZge.jpg medium (170x128)
Luke Quartermaine (K11-16) reports : It was great to have a healthy turnout of OFs of many different years varying from 2016 leavers to 2011 leavers. Meeting at the Crown before hand there was a great vibe in the team and the rest of the day was filled with much of the same spirit. In the match we faced a very strong College 1st XI and although we had moments of magic we quickly went 1-0 down. However, the great turnout of the crowd and a huge wave of support carried us to score 2 goals before half time to lead 2-1. We took the same enthusiasm into the second half but tired legs led to a final score of 3-2 to the College. Both teams had a great time and enjoyed interacting after the match. Next year we hope to do the same but in a Saturday night so that we can encourage more OFs to come along to support or play and then go for some drinks at the Crown afterwards. Thanks to all that played and came to support.

Death of late Ron Jones's widow

College Crest
Bob Williams reports : OFs who passed through Brandeston Hall during the Ron Jones years (1974-80) will be saddened to hear of the death, after a short illness, of Joyce Jones, on 16 December 2016. Joyce, who was in her mid-90s, will be fondly remembered for her supporting role to Ron, during his tenure as Master. It was, of course, in 1977 that the decision to admit girls to BH was taken and Joyce played a critical part in this first, tentative, move in a smooth transition towards co-education across the entire age range at Framlingham.

Her funeral will take place at 3.00 p.m., on Thursday, 5 January at the South Oxfordshire Crematorium, Garford, Abingdon OX13 5PA.

College 2016 Carol Service in Bury St Edmunds Cathedral

161214 Carol Service - St. Edmundsbury Cathedral 09 (170x113)
The College celebrated their 2016 Carol Service in St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St Edmunds. It was a wonderful occasion with Laura Wright (M02-08) the top billing. Her rendition of ‘In a Bleak Midwinter’ supported by the College Choir was a particular highlight and the video capturing the day has already gone ‘mini viral’ on social media. The video was produced by Alex Cameron (R95-01). Christmas is a time of cheer and festivity and it was thanks to the College Choir, the Chamber Choir and the Prep Choir that the entire service was brimming with delights and joy.

Year 12 London Careers Event - Friday 9th December 2016

OF Careers event 2016 thumbnail
Jane Easey writes: The 2nd London Careers Network Event, Friday 9th December 2016.

On Friday 9th December students currently in Year 12 (6th form) at the College visited London for a day of careers-related experiences organsied by their Head of Careers, Catherine Cranmer.  They attended a careers show at Excel in the morning followed by work placements with London-based parents and OFs in the afternoon. At the end of the day the students met with OFs at an informal drinks reception. This was kindly hosted by OF Richard Graves at the offices of JLT Re in the impressive and centrally located St. Botolph Building. The event was further supported by the generosity of the SOF and the College. See a group photograph here.

OFs, College staff and students mingled over drinks and nibbles and lots of career advice was on hand from a spread of generations. It was particularly good to see some very recent leavers this year - some working in London for the first time and others studying at University nearby. Thank you to all who supported this event and hopefully we will see this annual gathering supported by even more new faces next time.
