OFs rekindle rivalry in 2016 London Marathon

Henry Simpson & Mark Calvert

Reprising a friendly competitive rivalry that goes back more than 40 years to Brandeston Hall days, Mark Calvert (K79-84) and Henry Simpson (K79-84) will be running the London Marathon for charity on Sunday 24th April 2016.

Click here to see the start of the what they think was the first Framlingham College Half Marathon in 1983.  They weren’t at the front by the finish!  Anyone wishing to sponsor either or both of them can do so at the websites below, where every penny will be much appreciated.

Alex Myers-Allen (R04-13) - A Midsummer Nights Dream at Berkeley Castle

A Midsummer Night's Dream - July 2016 - small

The 19th February 2016 marked the 420th anniversary of the wedding between Lord Thomas Berkeley and Elizabeth Carey at Berkeley Castle - the wedding for which William Shakespeare wrote and first performed one of the most successful plays in theatre history - A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM. The London based company, Split Second Productions, will be returning to Berkeley Castle from 17th –27th July 2016 for what will be a history-making production of this play.

Set in the heart of a mythical forest surrounding Athens, four star-crossed lovers, a company of amateur actors and a fairy kingdom will collide to create one of the best-loved tales of falling in love - all in one night. But as we know, and as we are told; "The course of true love never did run smooth."

Producer Tom Berkeley holds very close familial ties to the project as he is a descendant of the very Berkeley family. Among the cast you will find students from the Guildford School of Acting including Alex Myers-Allen (R04-13), an undergraduate at the Guildford School of Acting, playing the part of Demetrius.

Popular Framlingham businessman to run London Marathon

Bill Bulstrode

Well known OF Bill Bulstrode (K62-69) got in touch to say "I'm taking part in the Virgin London Marathon 2016 on 24 April 2016 to raise money for Alzheimer's Society. I'm going to be raising money in memory of Maurice Cobb, my late father in law.  It's easy to donate online with a debit or credit card - just visit my JustGiving page . JustGiving sends your donation straight to Alzheimer's Society and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you are a UK taxpayer, so your donation is worth even more."

Bill runs the ever popular home, style and fun shop in the centre of Framlingham and is a member of OF Council.  Bill's shop was facing closure after 45 years but was reprieved due to popular demand!

Group Captain Percy Pickard's (G26-32) RAF Log Books examined

Pickard log books - photo of Bill and James - small
UPDATE : Following the original article, it was specifically circulated to OFs who were at the College when Pickard visited.  You can read all their memories here.

ORIGINAL :Thanks to the kind permission of ‘Lord Ashcroft and the Ashcroft Medal Collection’, Bill Collard (S55-58) and James Ruddock-Broyd (G46-52) have been able to research and photograph the three RAF log books that once belonged to Group Captain Percy C Pickard DSO** DFC and Czech Grand Cross (G26-32).

Some fascinating information and facts have been found including the exact date of Pickard’s visit to the college in WW2. Some mystery has always surrounded this trip with alleged records of Pickard flying into the nearby USAAF base in a US bomber or buzzing the college in his Tiger Moth. In fact he arrived at Parham airfield during the afternoon of 19th November 1943 flying his famous ‘F for Freddie’ Mosquito in which he would tragically lose his life some three months later. Read the full report here including James's analysis of the log books. You can also read the full biography on Pickard in the distinguished section of the website here.

Brian Rosen (S40-46), who was at the College at the time Pickard made his wartime visit, thought it might be interesting to hear recollections of this visit, so we have emailed this story to 29 OFs with an email address who were at the College on 19 November 1943 and we will publish later.
