The OFGS Spring Meeting took place for the fourth time at Royal Worlington & Newmarket Golf Club on Thursday, 9 May. The weather was fine and sunny, but there was an extremely strong wind which made good scoring difficult for most people. The course, as always, was testing and in excellent condition. Everyone enjoyed a good lunch and were well looked after by the secretary and his staff.

This year we had our best ever turnout at Royal Worlington, with twenty seven members. It was good to welcome back Chris Aylott, who had not played in an OFGS Meeting for many years, together with Tony Stebbings, Peter and Stephen Over each making their debut at an OFGS Meeting.

Robin Anderton, with an excellent score of 39 points, won the Captain’s Prize and the Captain, Jonny Newton, won the Minter Cup for the best scratch score of the day, 32 points.

Division 2 was won for the fourth year running by local member, Peter Howard-Dobson, with a score of 35 points. Local knowledge is obviously a great help and his handicap should surely come down soon – even a road traffic accident near Bury St Edmunds, which delayed the arrival of many people, including Peter, did not affect his game!

In the afternoon Robin Anderton and Michael Spencer won the foursomes over 9 holes with an excellent score of 22 points from Mike Schneidau and Tony Stebbings, who scored 17 points.

The full results were as follows:

Captain’s Prize

Robin Anderton

39

Minter Cup (Scratch)

Jonny Newton

32 (39 on handicap)

2nd Div 1

James Brocks

36

1st Div 2

Peter Howard-Dobson

35

2nd Div 2

Barry Lorkin

30

PM Foursomes (9 holes)

1st

Robin Anderton & Michael Spencer

22

2nd

Mike Schneidau & Tony Stebbings

17

At the AGM, following the prize giving, Norman Porter was elected Captain of OFGS and Richard Graves was re-elected Captain of OFGS First Team. We wish them every success, particularly after our 1st Round success in the Halford Hewitt this year.

We look forward to returning to Royal Worlington on Thursday, 8 May 2014.

 ...

David Turnbull, OFGS Secretary, writes with news to lift the spirits of OF Golfers everywhere:

“On Thursday, 11th April we were drawn to play against Stonyhurst in the first round at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club, Deal. For the second time since his captaincy of the team, Richard Graves arranged for the team to play some practice rounds at the beginning of March, and this definitely paid off.

For once, we were able to field our strongest team, so hopes of success were high. Pat Spraggs, our top player, made the long journey down from Scotland to join Richard Graves, Rob Atton, Gavin Cowell, Jonny Newton, Charlie Plunkett, Matt Stolls, Andrew Towler, Peter Watts and Johnny Wybar, with Mike Schneidau as reserve.

As usual, it was going to be a very tough match, but the preparation paid off, and we won 3½ –1½, our first win at this stage since 1989. One string of the match is particularly worthy of mention - Peter Watts and Rob Atton had played a rather tense 17th. They were all square on the tee, but it took a 20 foot putt by Peter to earn a half, and remain all square going down the 18th. It was a pivotal moment and a fantastic pressure putt. Peter then crunched a drive down 18, as only he can, and Rob and he then achieved a cast iron par 4 and won their match 1-up, to deliver the winning point we needed.

Earlier in the day, Gavin and Pat were a great lead-off pair, and they didn’t disappoint, giving us winning starts in both their first and second round matches. Matts Stolls and Jonny Newton halved both their matches, but only because the overall matches had finished. They were up in both their games, at the time, so were quite annoyed to only get credit for a half.

Our second-round match was against Merchant Taylors’, to whom we lost by the same margin as we won in the first round. It’s perhaps instructive to note that, had we secured a point further up the match, we could have turned the tables and won! There really wasn’t much in it at all.

The team had a great few days, and it was a proud moment when we finally got the monkey off our backs with the Stonyhurst result.

The team was ably supported by Richard Sayer, SOF President, Norman Porter, SOF Hon Sec, Andrew Wright and Mike Schneidau.

We stayed in the Pegwell Bay Hotel, and thanks are due once again to Andy Towler for making all the arrangements.

Next year we shall lose the services of Pat, who plans to turn professional in September – a great loss for the team, but we wish him every success in his chosen career."

L-R: Mike Schneidau, Andrew Wright, Andrew Towler, Charlie Plunkett, Richard Graves, Jonny Newton, Richard Sayer, Peter Watts, Matt Stolls, Rob Atton, Pat Spraggs, Johnny Wybar, Gavin Cowell and Norman Porter. ...

Does anyone have an explanation? A quick perusal of recent Yearbooks reveals that over the last four London suppers, Stradbroke Old Boys made up nearly half the turnout whilst Garrett, Kerrison and Rendlesham Houses contributed less than a 1/5th each (I have discounted the newer houses for the sake of simplifying the arithmetic). Equally interestingly, when you look at the Suffolk Suppers, the turnout is much more even: Garrett is slightly ahead at 29% and Stradbroke slightly behind at 21%.

Does this simply mean that more ex-Stradbroke folk live near London and if so, why? I offer as a prize for the most logical and/or amusing explanation, a bottle of South Australia’s finest shiraz wine!”

Email Neville with your suggestions.
...

Marcus Beale (M74-81) : We should acknowledge the recent stunning success of Marcus and his 450 officers in the West Midlands counter-terrorism unit in pre-empting a potentially catastrophic event in the twilight world of home-grown would-be suicide bombers.

Marcus joined the W. Midlands Police Force in June 2011 as Assistant Chief Constable with specific regional and national responsibility for counter-terrorism policy. He previously held the post of Chief Superintendent with Nottinghamshire Police and Assistant Chief Constable with the Staffordshire Force.

We are all indebted to the likes of Marcus for their indefatigablepursuit of those who aspire to commit mass murder on the streets of the UK. More power to his elbow as he continues to operate in this sensitive and vital field.

On-line news link: here
...
